Who we are
My name is Tais De Los Reyes. My husband Adam, a U.S. Navy veteran, and I are the owners of Athena’s Cantina on Route 1 in Freeport. Where we serve up fine Latin Fusion cuisine, specializing mainly in Mexican and Brazilian dishes. Providing an atmosphere that welcomes everyone and makes you feel like you’re at home. Besides raising our family here, we’ve accomplished so much since coming to Freeport in 2018. Most notably, we started our restaurant just a few weeks before COVID hit; and using our wits and good business sense, we survived! We’ve built our business against all odds.
As business owners, we are excited about bringing new opportunities to Freeport, while being respectful of those already established in this wonderful town. To which, we are so blessed to be part of. Our journey began when we worked hard with the town, to allow food trucks. It all started with a food trailer we began operating in July 2019. Just months after opening, we were informed that the town had no regulations for food trailers, which resulted in a change to our classification as a food truck. Since the town didn’t allow food trucks, we were forced to close.
Not ready to quit, we set out not only to change zoning and regulations but also to explore opening a brick-and-mortar establishment. To maintain momentum, we decided to open Athena's Cantina on February 22, 2020, just two weeks before the pandemic shut down everything. We were scared and had no idea what we had just gotten ourselves into, but we were already so invested that we took that time to learn about our new business and work with the town to eventually bring something new and exciting to our community.
In the time since, we’ve been honored multiple times and have won several local competitions, including:
